NorthJersey.com and The Record, part of the USA Today Network, are seeking a graphic artist who specializes in portraits to draw our Athlete of the Week feature and produce related content for our web site and social media pages. Athlete of the Week is a 70+ year tradition in The Record, and the right candidate will be taking over for the original artist. During high school sports off-season time, additional digital graphics assignments will be produced as time permits. This is a fully remote position.
In This Role, You Will
- Draw multiple Athletes of the Week each week using reference photographs, which are usually shot by a staff photographer but at times may be provided by families.
- Produce video animations such as time lapses of the drawings being created
- Brainstorm with editors in meetings and contribute ideas around Athlete of the Week and high school sports
- Understand Athlete of the Week’s unique place in North Jersey high school sports history and be a driving force for its future
- During the off-season, create other graphics and illustrations as assigned
- Work independently and communicate regularly with editors about work assignments
- Meet print and digital deadlines
Requirements
- Proficiency creating portraits using Adobe graphics, photo and video software, including Illustrator, Photoshop, and Premiere.
- Experience using Adobe After Effects a plus.
- Understanding of social media video formats and ability to produce multiple versions on deadline
- Ability to write accurate, detailed captions.
- Understanding of social media and how to engage audiences on
- digital platforms.
- Effective communicator
- Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure

The hourly rate for this role will range between $14.78 and $33.73. Variable
compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable.
