As a Principal Character Artist at NetEase, you will play a pivotal role in the entire game development lifecycle. Your primary focus will be creating high-quality 3D game characters across various genres and styles, contributing significantly to the NetEase Art Center. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate on joint development projects with renowned global game studios, allowing you to leverage your talents to the fullest extent.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently execute various character development and production tasks in collaboration with global studios and NetEase’s internal teams to enhance product quality.
  • Collaborate closely with art directors, animators, concept artists, VFX artists, and game designers to deliver assets according to approved production schedules.
  • Create high-fidelity character models based on original designs, ranging from realistic to stylized, catering to Mobile to AAA IPs.
  • Support the concept team by validating pre-design work effectively.
  • Actively seek feedback and mentor fellow team members to elevate their character art skills and overall studio product quality.
  • Research, develop, and advocate for best practices in character, creature, and weapon creation pipelines to ensure high-quality outputs.
  • Optimize character representation within game engine constraints to enhance visual fidelity.
  • Assist in guiding and advancing the team to align with project-specific art styles.
  • Cultivate long-term relationships with team members across global studios.
  • Collaborate with Technical Art and Engineering teams to identify and implement technology requirements that align with product goals.

Job Requirements:

  • Principal character artist with a proven track record in at least 2-3 AAA games through full-cycle development.
  • Demonstrated ability to enhance development efficiency and quality across upstream and downstream processes.
  • Proficiency in creating high-quality character models using tools such as Maya, 3DsMAX, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Photoshop, Marvelous Designer, and Unreal Engine 5.
  • Deep understanding of human anatomy, hard surface modeling, organic musculature, and Metahuman and 3D head scanning techniques.
  • Familiarity with skinning, weighting, and other animation-related technical processes.
  • Experience collaborating with external development teams, both as a client and a vendor.
  • Skilled in sculpting precise character models using ZBrush and proficient in texturing with Substance Painter and Photoshop.
  • Experience implementing production pipelines in major game engines (Unreal 5), with the ability to tailor workflows to team and project needs.
  • Strong organizational skills, self-motivation, and a proactive approach to taking ownership of projects.
  • Some proficiency in sketching to effectively communicate visual concepts with internal teams and partners.
