Job Description
The Pine Barrens Tribune, a weekly community newspaper based in New Jersey, has an immediate opening for a part-time graphic artist/designer to work from home one day a week (occasionally two) to professionally paginate/layout the newspaper and build/create ads and other products as necessary.
Primary hours are from about
11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
eastern (end times can vary and can occasionally be later) on
Thursdays
. A
couple of hours of work on Wednesdays, primarily after 7 p.m. eastern may also be occasionally required
, particularly during the peak of holiday advertising or weeks of large special sections. The successful candidate must also be able to be on call to handle special ad or layout requests, as well as to handle emergencies, particularly Thursday evenings into Friday mornings when the file is with the printer.
The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated, extremely creative individual ready from the outset to design, invent and mold newspaper and advertisement layouts into eye-catching ads and prepare newspaper pagination. The successful candidate will also be responsible for the professional creation, maintenance and pre-press of editorial and advertising sections for the newspaper—from concept through execution.
We’re looking for someone who takes pride in their work and has excellent design sense, strong typography skills, superior pagination skills, a strong work ethic and understands the reality of working in a deadline driven environment. Collaboration is a must to ensure quality and that designs/layout are aligned with customer and publisher requests, internal brand standards, departmental goals and project timelines.
The ideal candidate should be able to professionally paginate a 12 to 24-page newspaper with articles, images and advertising within a 4-6-hour timeframe tops, and a 28 to 36-page newspaper within 8-10 hours tops, from the outset, by following a provided layout, past design patterns and using prior layout files, and then turnaround a proof(s) for approval by the editorial team and publisher. Any candidate should be amenable to making edits and accommodating requests upon review of the proof(s).
The majority of this position entails newspaper pagination and layout work in the CURRENT version of Adobe InDesign through the Creative Cloud Suite, but the successful candidate should know how to layout and design eye-catching ads for publication in BOTH Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.
The Tribune does not use Quark.
A very reliable computer and internet connection, as well as an operating system is a must. A web cam, microphone (built into the camera is OK) and speakers is also a requirement
for both virtual communications and screen sharing through Zoom. The successful candidate must have subscription to the latest Adobe Creative Cloud/InDesign software to be considered for this position, and thoroughly understand how to use the programs and all its features. A smartphone that is capable of receiving text messages and group text messages is also a must, and the ideal candidate will be expected to check and respond to their messages regularly, including by phone, text and email.
Due to file upload and proofing requirements, the successful candidate must also know how to comfortably use both Dropbox, WeTransfer, Google Drive and Zoom, as well as upload files to FTP sites
, in addition to the latest version of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. The ideal candidate must also be able to convert files to various formats, including PDF, and know how to professionally communicate.

Please note that animated cartoon graphic arts is NOT what we are looking for at this time.
We truly take a team approach at the Pine Barrens Tribune to each and everything we do. We are a group of driven individuals focused on connecting the communities we love and empowering the businesses we serve. We have become one of the most appreciated and read newspapers in South Jersey.
Recent college graduates (so long as you know how to use InDesign/Creative Suite), and candidates from out of state are welcome to apply as this is a remote position. Any candidate, however, must be from the Lower 48 states of the United States to be considered for this position.
